Obituary for Alan Raymond Erwin
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend was born November 19, 1929 in Spearville, Kansas to parents Edgar Leland Erwin and Iva Laurel Harmon Erwin. On Friday, March 23, 2018, he was welcomed into eternity by the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Al leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Margaret (Odom), two children, Coni Diane Erwin Williams and Timothy Alan Erwin, daughter-in-law Gretchen (Finley) Erwin, two granddaughters, Erin Lee Bergen and Chloe Bess (Jason) Stephan; two grandsons, Beau Davis Williams and Matthew Alexander Erwin and four nieces and two nephews, and his many, many friends.
A very good all-round athlete, Al starred on the baseball and basketball teams of Louisville High School in Illinois. After graduating in 1947, he signed a contract to play professional baseball in Iowa and Alabama. After injuring his pitching arm, he joined the United States Army during the Korean War, serving as a Military Policeman. Following his stint in the Army, Al used his charm, sense of humor and outgoing personality to forge a successful sales career spanning over fifty years.
After moving to Arizona in 1976, he remained an avid, lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs. Al adopted the Arizona State University Sun Devils, going to as many of their baseball games as possible. He would always arrive at the games early to assist a group of disabled Sun Devil fans. Upon his retirement, he entered a brief career as
an actor, appearing in six feature films in minor roles. His favorite pastimes included being with his family, attending church, walking with his friends at the Chandler Fashion Center and being a regular at BJ’s Brewery where everyone knew his name. Al was happy and proud to be part of the body of Christ, as a deacon and teacher. He and Margaret supported the expansion and building of three churches in his
lifetime, the most recent being the Oasis Church currently undergoing construction in Gilbert, Arizona.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at Falconer Funeral Home, located at 251 W. Juniper in Gilbert, Arizona. Visitation will start at 11:00 a.m. with services starting at noon.
